Alabama Lions Sight Conservation Association, in conjunction with the EyeSight Foundation of Alabama and the Callahan Eye Foundation Hospital announced two weeks ago that it will be helping individuals and families around the state of Alabama that have been displaced by Hurricane Katrina.
"We are currently accepting patients on a provisional basis that don't meet our normal six-month Alabama residency requirement," said Julie Beckham, General Manager of Alabama Lions Sight. "The Lions of Alabama have made it clear that they want to help the victims get their lives back on track by assisting with eye care."
The Callahan Eye Foundation is donating 100 pairs of eyeglass frames to the provisional Alabama Lions Sight patients, and the EyeSight Foundation of Alabama has agreed to purchase the lenses that will accompany the frames.
"Without the support from our partnering organizations, this effort would not be possible,"said Beckham.
Alabama Lions Sight is also working on an agreement with Vision Services Plan (VSP) that will facilitate the dispatching of ALSCA's Mobile Screening Unit to Biloxi, Miss. The unit will serve as a temporary office space for displaced eye doctors in the area.
Katrina evacuees that need assistance may call 800-96-SIGHT, ext. 225 for more information on how to apply.
