In 1998, The Mobile Screening Unit was established to travel throughout Alabama and screen school children for visual acuity, muscle balance, and hearing, as well as screen communities for visual acuity, glaucoma, diabetes, blood pressure and hearing.
Screening more and more children and adults every year, The Mobile Screening Unit is helping communities by diagnosing eye and health problems and referring people to local doctors.
Often, those who require treatment qualify for Alabama Lions Sight and receive help in paying for eye exams, glasses, and a variety of other eye care costs.
What are some of the ways The Mobile Screening Unit impacts a community?
- Less Abnormal Screenings. Our statists show that once The Mobile Screening Unit has visited a particular community, each subsequent visit finds less abnormalities in the people tested. The reason for this finding is simply that those with detected abnormalities from the prior visit sought treatment for their condition and are no longer considered to be abnormal.
- A Financial Resource for the Indigent. For those who can't afford treatment for their detected conditions, The Mobile Screening Unit serves to refer them to organizations who can help, such as Alabama Lions Sight.
